Fast 50 Brands 2016

Fast 50 Final 430 900

A company is known by its brand value. A brand image is often the mirror through which a company’s key values are reflected. A lot is spend to create a brand image which becomes an identity of the company. There are hundreds of companies vying for national and international space in the market. Its the brand Image and brand value that sets them apart.

To honour “Brand Excellence” amongst the best brands in the country, El SOl Media conceptualised “Fast 50 Brands Awards”. It was not an easy task to pick the best 50. The challenge was to find the most prolific ones and also the “game changers” in their own right.

El Sol Media categorised the 250 odd entries into 9 industries and a detailed phase wise analysis of the contenders through secondary research driven by WCRC research team was carried out. The result is for all to see which has been published in the book Fast 50.

The Awards were presented and the book released on 9th June 2016 by veteran Actor Dharmendra along with Mukesh Kahnna, Abhimanyu Ghosh and Saimik Sen in a glittering ceremony held at Hotel Sahara Star, Mumbai.

Buildings as Ideas — The Un-Built work of Charles Correa

Charles Correa

Buildings as Ideas – The Un-Built work of Charles Correa.

A truly inspiring book and the exhibition was put together by Nondita Correa Mehrotra, and was launched at Max Mueller Bhavan, Kalaghoda,  Mumbai on 15th March 2016.

The exhibition is a collection of Charles Correa’s  un-built work: competition entries, commissions and public projects, which are are rich repositories of his ideas and occupy a significant portion of his oeuvre.

This un-built work, though less well-known, contributed significantly to the clarity of his thought and design. Here the seminal idea is kept intact, unhindered by the pragmatic force of the building process. This exhibition highlights these un-built projects, through the drawings and sketches of Correa’s archive.

The book is a complete reflection of the works exhibited at the Gallery. We have printed earlier works of Charles Correa and it was honour to be a part of this project also.

JAK New Year Card 2016 — Lithography at its best.

New Year Card 2016 JAK

This year JAK decided to usher in the new year 2016 in a unique manner. The Think tank was called and their verdict – the greeting card has to be different, uncommon and rare. Not a tall order, given the expertise of JAK in print, but rarity factor in the job was a challenge. The solution  – to get it done on one of our antique collection of print machines.

Now, JAK has a unusual collection of rare and antique print machines. These are not mere showpieces or decorated scraps, but machines that are in perfect working conditions.

Yoda Foot Operated letterpress machine, Multilith Model 1031 offset duplicator, Alexandra Press Lithographic Machine to name a few. For the New Year Greeting Card, the workaholic Alexandra , a machine from W. Notting Iron Press 1883 was chosen.

This time around, we used a metal plate to print text and art work on to the hand made paper. Ink from rollers was applied on the metal plate kept on the press bed. Paper was kept face down on the block. Crank handle, connected to the gear box, moved the block below the scraper. Scraper bar holder applied the required pressure when the lever was moved.

The result – a beautiful impression got transferred on to the paper. Two folds and the Greeting card was ready for dispatch.

The Indecisive Chicken

TC1 -5

An odd name for a cook book that prescribes to chicken dishes, Prajna Desai has  put together an exceptional book on her sojourn with the womens of Dharavi while working on The Food Project commissioned by Dharavi Biennale.

Prajna Desai recounts that she was so overwhelmed by the response and culinary skills of the participants that she decided to bring out a book on eight womens of Dharavi sharing their life experiences and recipes of the savoury dishes they loved to cook.

The book is bilingual in English and Hindi with both the languages typefaced on two columns side by side on the same page. The vibrant  illustrations gives you a feel of the dishes if not of the taste.

The book was printed at JAK Printers and we too are proud to associated with this project of Prajna Desai

Print Books Vs E-books

e-print books

The debate started immediately after the advent of e-book readers on the traditional book shelves. The forecasters predicted death knell to print media.  Digital Media was heralded as the new messiah of the publishing world. E-book reader sales jumped many fold and every living being wanted a screen reader for himself.

However the picture was always different from the predictions. Print media was never out of the race and infact was leading from the front. The online sales of printed books never dwindled and even surpassed the purchased e-book contents. It even withstood the onslaught of free e-book downloads. Recent study have indicated that the bright intense screen of the e-book readers could lead to stress,  and even insomnia.

Read aloud printed illustrations had always been a way to put toddlers to sleep. The result is absolutely clear. Print media will always remain the first choice of readers.  The print and publishing industry will co exist the e-book readers.

Capturing Wildlife Moments in India

Ashok Mahindra

“Capturing Wildlife Moments in India” is a one of its kind book. This book is published by BNHS and was released by Mr. Jamshyd Godrej in a warm ceremony. Numerous books have been written on the subject, but this one is a clear winner. This book has more than 120 photographs of wild animals and birds from various parks and sanctuaries of India. Each and every photograph of the species has a small introduction, a brief on the picture taking experience and the location as to where it was shot. The author, Mr. Ashok Mahindra went a step further by detailing every species and the threats posed by them, efforts at conserving them while also identifying the IUCN rating for each of the species photographed. The above information is a boon to amateurs.

Mr. Ashok Mahindra is a former treasurer and Vice President of WWF, India. He started his career as a Chartered Accountant. After 40 years of number crunching he took retirement only to pursue his hobby of wildlife photography.  The excellent photographs are a testimony of his patience and endurance in getting the right moment at the right time of the wildlife in India.

We at JAK have been part of this prestigious book right from the beginning. From designing to final printing – it has been a memorable experience.

A small gesture.

Nepal-Aid

On 25th April 2015 a devastating earthquake shook Nepal. Thousands lost their lives and scores were injured. During these natural calamities the worst affected are women and children. The relief are prompt but the needs of the infants and kids are often overlooked.

Our team JAK took the initiative and started a collection drive. In no time a sizeable amount was collected. The next goal was to buy emergency medicine and other food materials for infants and kids.  Our local chemist was contacted and the team managed to get the required medicines and baby foods at cost price.

The supplies were then  promptly delivered to a team of doctors and volunteers  scheduled to leave on 30th  April 2015 to Nepal.

It was a small gesture, but the idea was to spread the awareness of the huge calamity faced by our neighbouring country Nepal. We took a small step and hope the other will join the relief efforts to bring more respite to Nepal.
